Dog In Winter Tips

You may think that dogs don’t mind the cold and wet weather, but they can also feel cold just like humans, and although they may have thick fur it doesn’t protect all the parts of their body, and they can get frostbite and hypothermia. For example, their ears, paws, and noses are exposed directly to the cold. There are a few other things that require our attention during cold winter days, so what can we do to make our dog happy and safe during the cold winter days?

  1. The first is very easy: simply limit the outdoor time and make sure they keep active and never leave your dog outside unattended. (e.g., In your back garden).

  2. Small dogs, puppies, and older dogs may be the ones that feel cold the most, so make sure you dress them warmly. A good quality coat with a fleece that is water and windproof is a good idea.

  3. It is very important to wash or wipe your dog paws after a walk outside because they can get a build-up of ice, snow, and salt which can irritate and even cause chemical burns. Worse are chemicals like antifreeze and de-icers which apparently have a sweet taste and are poisonous if your dog licks them. Always keep your antifreeze product at home, out of reach of your dog. If you suspect your dog has swallowed antifreeze, take them to the vet immediately.

  4. You may not know that fleas like central heating! Try to vacuum your house more often and make sure your dog is up to date with their flea treatment.

  5. We all know to not to leave your dog in the car in the heat, and the same applies to cold weather. In cold conditions, cars can cool down very quickly.

  6. Keep your dog’s coat in a healthy condition during the winter by increasing the good proteins and fats in his diet.
